Set or change your nameservers

Nameservers decide which servers are authoritative for your domain, in other words where your DNS records live. Point your domain to the right nameservers and your website and e-mail resolve correctly.

When do you change them?

• You host your domain with us and want to use our fast, geographically distributed nameservers.
• You use an external DNS provider and want to point the domain there.
• You are moving your site or e-mail to a new host.

How to set them

• Open your domain in the control panel and go to the nameserver settings.
• Enter the nameservers you want to use (for our hosting, use the ones we provide).
• Save. A change can take a few hours to propagate.

Nameservers or DNS records?

Nameservers decide who manages your DNS; the individual records (A, CNAME, MX) decide where things point. Once your nameservers are correct, you manage the records themselves. See DNS records explained.

Frequently asked questions

My site is down after changing nameservers. Give it time to propagate, and make sure your DNS records exist on the new nameservers.

How many nameservers do I need? Usually at least two, for redundancy. At ID-Euro you get three by default: ns1.xdns.be, ns2.xdns.be and ns3.x-dns.eu, spread across different countries and different TLDs for extra resilience.
